The Dev-Team have been up to their brilliant tricks and have managed to create some software to unlock the iPhone 3G so it can be used on non-standard mobile contracts with non-standard SIMs. Ironically, they're calling it yellowsn0w.

I say ironic, because the first ringtone I created (ripped-off) for my 1^st gen iPhone was a snippet from the Frank Zappa song called "Nanook Rubs It" on his Apostrophe album. There's a about a five second part of that track where Frank yells "Great Googly Moogly" and then lets rip on his guitar for about a half a bar.

Feel free to download a Great Googly Moogly for your iPhone here. It should install using the normal method using iTunes and doesn't require an unlocked and/or jailbroken iPhone. It will work on 1^st gen or 3G iPhones. You'll need to unzip the file beforehand, of course.
